The story of ProDen PlaqueOff® begins in 1970s, when Swedish dentist Sune Wikner by chance discovered that one of his patients, who had previously suffered from chronic tartar formation, suddenly displayed a greatly improved oral health. The change baffled Wikner who decided to find out what had caused the plaque and tartar to disappear.
After some investigating, Wikner realised there was something new in his patient’s diet that was keeping the tartar at bay. Eventually the dentist traced the therapeutic ingredient which turned out to be a certain type of seaweed, Ascophyllum nodosum, which was consumed by his patient on a regular basis. However, due to different circumstances, it was not until twenty years later that the curious link between seaweed and oral health was further explored.
In 1999 Sune Wikner and his colleague Roland Fastberg came across a dog in the north of Sweden whose teeth had been positively affected by a pet food which contained the very same marine algae. As a result of these unique findings, Sune Wikner and Roland Fastberg created the company Swedencare (SDC) which together with dentists in Sweden carried out a number of studies that showed that Ascophyllum nodosum has an effect on the bacteria in the mouth that is behind bad breath, plaque, tartar and bleeding gums in both people and pets.
In 2011 ProDen PlaqueOff® celebrated 10 years of promoting better oral health in people and pets.
After extensive analysis and testing on humans, Dr Wikner was able to get the seaweed compressed into capsule form and in 2001, ProDen PlaqueOff® was launched. Patents were successfully applied for in more than 30 countries around the world and these patents also included the preventative treatment of a number of illnesses in different parts of the body that are caused by the spread of oral bacteria.
ProDen PlaqueOff® is currently experiencing a rapid increase in sales on many markets and in 2007 Swedencare was ranked the 25th fastest growing company in Sweden. PlaqueOff® Human and PlaqueOff® Animal are distributed across the world and are available in a health food store, or a pet shop, near you.
